A discogram is a diagnostic procedure for whom other diagnostic tests have failed to reveal clear information of a suspected disc as a source of pain when surgical intervention is being considered as the next course of action.
This procedure is done in a sterile environment. During the procdure, needles are inserted through an introducer and into the disc by x-ray guidance. Contrast dye is injected into the disc and patient pain response as well as disc pressure is recorded.
This may be repeated at several levels as well as at a control level for accurate results. A Computerized Axial Tomography (CT) scan is performed after the test.
Additional Information:
Your pain may become worse for 24-48 hours. Use any medication your physician has prescribed for you during this time.
You may have soreness at the injection site for 24-48 hours. Avoid applying heat to the area during this time as this will increase swelling. Use ice as described in your post-procedure instructions. If any redness or fever occurs, contact your physician immediately or go to an urgent care.
